Dope Wars

Dope Wars is a turn-based strategy computer game in which the player assumes the role of a drug dealer. The object of the game is to deal the most drugs to pay off the "loan shark" (who charges interest) by the end of the game and make a profit.

Zynga developed a version of the game for social networking websites, such as Myspace and Facebook. Their version changes some mechanics of the game.

Zynga's rendition of Dope Wars took the basic layout of the original game and turned it into an MMORPG style game with user interaction. The player's objectives are to deal drugs, hire live workers, fight with them for cash in fight club, gamble in the casino, and travel the world while doing missions and building their cartel.

Fish Wrangler

Fish Wrangler facebook application

Fish Wrangler is a passive fishing browser game played on Facebook. Players can cast every 15 minutes to catch a variety of fish from the fictional locations of Farovia and Icelantica. The game was created by Joe Faron, and artwork is by Daniel Roper.

The goal of the game is to catch all the different types of fishes in Farovia and Icelantica (the fictional lands in this game). Players start in Waterport, an island in Farovia, with a basic pole, either an Oak Branch pole or a Broken Standard pole. Each fish caught will gain the player points and gold, which can be used to purchase other items. These include more advanced poles and skills, which will enable the player to catch rarer and more valuable fish, as well as boats which enable the player to explore other islands.

A player may cast once every 15 minutes, although additional casts may occur when a member of the player's crew (a Facebook friend that has been invited to join the player in the game) can take the player fishing with them. In addition to crew trips, players who invite others to use the application will become a captain for the invited player, and both the captain and the apprentice will receive one captain trip (a trip in which the apprentice receives some of the reward for the captain's catch) a day, provided the captain has been seen recently. Players who fish at least once on any given day will also receive automated "deckhand checks" for the remainder of that day.

Players may also complete quests, which involve catching a certain quota of fish with a specified pole. Quests offer rewards in the form of augments, which allow the player to level their pole thirty levels past the usual maximum. Advanced quests may also reward players with "liquid gold", a resource used to attract particularly rare fish.

Lexulous

Lexulous facebook application

Lexulous (formerly Scrabulous), is an online word game based on the commercial board game Scrabble. It is run by an Indian company of the same name on the dedicated website at www.lexulous.com, and is also available within the social networking site Facebook.

Being one of the very first applications launched on Facebook, Scrabulous enjoyed relatively large popularity on the social networking site. It was recently featured in PC World's 100 best products of 2008, and appeared in a question in the quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?.

The Scrabulous company was founded by Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla, both commerce graduates of St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, India. Scrabulous.com was created at the end of 2005, after the Agarwalla brothers, Rajat (26) who holds a degree in business administration and Jayant (21) an undergraduate who has won numerous Scrabble tournaments, felt the need for a free gaming site where the popular game could be played. It was initially made available as BingoBinge.com. On July 5, 2006, the site was moved to Scrabulous.com.

The Scrabulous web site was launched in 2005, and the game was added to Facebook as an application in 2007, quickly becoming the most popular game on Facebook. In 2008 the game was removed from Facebook, first for North American users and later worldwide, because of copyright infringement lawsuits. The original Web site was shut down as of 25 September 2008. Users attempting to access it were advised "The site is taking a coffee break. Sorry for the inconvenience". On September 26, 2008, the scrabulous.com site had been fully replaced with a GoDaddy.com placeholder page.

In 2006 the website had 20,000 registered users, but after the developers made an application for the popular social networking website Facebook it has been added to 840,000 user pages, with more than 500,000 users daily, giving it "the most active users of any game that can be played over Facebook".

Wordscraper Took its Place on Facebook

Wordscraper is a Scrabble-style word game available as a Facebook application. It was created by the Agarwalla brothers Rajat and Jayant, creators of Scrabulous, and differs from Scrabble by having no fixed board design or tile distribution, instead prompting the user to choose their own.

A game design application (the design space of which almost includes Scrabble) has received an influx of people from the recent closure of Scrabulous in North America. Much of the popular press reports inaccurately that Wordscraper was released after Scrabulous was shut down. It has in fact been available on Facebook since January 2008.

(Lil) Green Patch

(Lil) Green Patch facebook application

(lil) Green Patch is a Facebook application developed by David King and Ashish Dixit that simulates a small garden on a Facebook user's profile. By tending their and their friends' gardens, the Facebook users are able to raise money for Nature Conservancy to save the rain forest. In September 2008 it was rated as the number one application on Facebook ahead of Texas HoldEm Poker. In April 2009 it had slid to a sixth ranking.

In the first quarter of 2008 (lil) Green Patch users raised over $15,000 in donations which was enough to save more than 13,600,000 square feet (1.26 km2) of rainforest. The application was then among the 15 most popular Facebook applications with 350,000 active users. In June, 2008 it was one of the top ten most installed applications with more than 5,217,180 installations and 521,718 active users a day. By October 2008, the app had raised $91,000 for the Nature Conservancy, though it has been pointed out that this amounts to pennies per active user. In December 2008 the number of users was reported at 6.3 million and the application was ranked as one of the five most popular Facebook applications. The area of Costa Rican rain forest that had been saved at that time was up to 70 million square feet.

(lil) Green Patch has been described as the "granddaddy of green Facebook apps" and has inspired many other similar applications

Mafia Wars

Mafia Wars is a multiplayer browser game created by Zynga. It was the 2009 Webby Award People's Voice Winner in the Games category. It is on several social networking sites and on the iPhone.

Mafia Wars is set in New York City and Little Italy, with the option for players to travel between New York, Cuba (level 35+), Moscow (level 70+) and Bangkok (upon unlocking items from New York levels, level 18+), and in 2010, Las Vegas. The game revolves around doing and mastering jobs to earn cash and experience, with the goal of establishing and advancing one's criminal empire. Players create mafias by recruiting players and using reward points to hire extra mafia members. Social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Friendster allow players to recruit from friends to build their mafia and fight against other players. Players can also improve their stats by visiting the Godfather (ie, making a micropayment).

Gameplay revolves around timers: players have limited energy (for doing jobs), and health and stamina meters (for fighting other players), in a manner similar to an RPG game, which slowly recharges over time. With the help of other mafia members that have been recruited, players can eventually fight other players, which may or may not result in the theft of cash, "icing", or "death" of the other player. The game operates on a level up basis. The player earns experience points by completing jobs. Players who manage to complete special tasks (for example, winning fights against bigger mafias or winning fifteen fights in a row) are labeled as having accomplished an "achievement", resulting in a bonus for the player. As they level up, more jobs and features become available, such as the ability to visit Cuba to expand their criminal empire.

Character Classes

There are three classes that a player has to choose from when they first start the game. Each class offers a reduced amount of recharge time to one of the three timers. The three classes are:

Maniac: This class has an energy recharge timer of three minutes, unlike the other two classes which have a timer of five minutes. Also the Buttonman position is only available for Maniacs

Mogul: This class gets 5% more money from jobs in all cities. Also, the Top Mafia Bagman position is only for Moguls.

Fearless: This class receives a stamina recharge time reduction (every 3 minutes as opposed to the usual 5). Also, only Fearless players can be a Wheelman in a person's Top Mafia

Mob Wars

Mob Wars facebook application

Mob Wars is a multiplayer browser game|multiplayer role-playing game hosted on the social networking site Facebook. It allows players to engage in Mafia-style wars with one another and has become one of the most lucrative Facebook applications and the first to net USD$1M per month in revenue. This number, however, has never been confirmed by the developer or any third parties.

Mob Wars is a simple role-playing game. There is no world for the player to move around in, and the only type of character interaction the player experiences is with other players, either by sending them messages or by attacking them. Like many Facebook applications, most of the gameplay revolves around having friends of the player join the player's mob through means made possible in the game.

The player starts off as a petty thief and must work their way up to the top of the crime chain. The player is able to equip his character, and any member of his mob with weapons, armor and cars that are purchased with game money, which is either acquired by doing jobs, fighting other players, earning it from property purchased from said money.

MouseHunt

MouseHunt facebook application

MouseHunt is a popular Facebook application in which players, referred to as hunters, catch mice with a variety of traps in order to earn experience points and virtual gold through passive gameplay. From time to time the developers add new locations and mice as well as sponsor periodic giveaways and tournaments. MouseHunt was developed by HitGrab, Inc. under the direction of Bryan Freeman and Joel Augé and released to a select group of participants for beta testing in early 2008. On 7 March 2008, MouseHunt was officially released to the general public. Just nine months later, MouseHunt earned its creators a $250,000 development grant from Facebook.

Game description from the application page: MouseHunt is a Facebook game of epic proportions. You are a hunter, hired by the king to find and trap the mice that infest his kingdom. For each mouse you catch, you'll find a unique reward, bringing you closer to being the best MouseHunter in the land!

The game of MouseHunt is set in the fantasy kingdom of Gnawnia. The player is a hunter, hired by the King of Gnawnia to catch mice that infest the kingdom by using virtual traps, bases and cheese.

Mice have certain power weaknesses, and using certain trap power types would influence the effectiveness of the trap against certain types of mice. Also using different kinds of cheese could give you a higher chance of catching varieties of mice.

The player (hunter) arms his or her trap and baits it with cheese and then sounds the "Hunter's Horn" every 15 minutes. Every time the player sounds the horn, he is taken on a hunt and has a possibility of catching a mouse. For each mouse the player catches, he gets a unique reward, which is a certain amount of points and gold, dependent on the breed of mouse and its weight, captured. Automatic "Trap Checks" conducted at the top of each hour allow for a total of five opportunities to catch mice every hour.
