Have we learnt from “The Day After Tomorrow” – Part two

Let me continue after the previous post – part one.

The most important thing that is depicted in the movie is the climate change that starts because of global warming. There seems to be like that climate change has already started. There flooding of rivers in India is increasing every year. The untimely seasons are also effect of this. Still it doesn’t motivate us to make a move.

Increasing usage of motor vehicles which pollute the environment heavily is considered as a notable cause and many organizations are trying to make people aware of it. The usage of common vehicles like buses must be encouraged by the government. Some cities have already made plans for that. Delhi has allowed many private buses called blue line buses to transport commuter in the city. But the problem it faced was that these privately run buses have recruited inexperienced drivers. This resulted in many accidents to count more than 50 deaths in a week. Note that Delhi is also the city where the first meeting was held for global warming prevention in the movie “The Day After Tomorrow”.

The biggest obstacle for the move against global warming is that it affects many countries economically. That is the reason why the developing countries are worried about stopping destruction of environment. In the Terminator 2 movie, the terminator says at one point time that ‘it is in your nature to hurt yourself’. The biggest people lose the big picture of the society and environment and forget the small people. Thus the initiative must start from the biggest people.

Though there are troubles in making a move against global warming we must use our intelligence and courage to find solutions to avoid the global disaster for the mankind.

Have we learnt from “The Day After Tomorrow” – Part one

The Day After Tomorrow has been a great movie in the science fiction genre as well as in the moral sense. It was a very good movie to forecast a future disaster which we all have to face. But have yet learnt the moral from this great movie?

I never before had watched this movie. But after reading about global warming and the future disasters I found that this movie is about the dangerous effects of global warming on our lives. After that I had watched the movie. I liked it very much as it portrays the disaster very well to grab the attention of any sensible human being.

Many critics acclaimed the movie to be a great show but criticized it only for some technical inaccuracies. For example, the occurrence of tornadoes is not predicted by the scientists with regard to global warming. But the after effects like immediate freezing are accurately depicted. Then the few people trying to get warmth in the library building without a chimney was a fault.
After all this the main intent of the movie was to make everyone aware of the global disaster that is going to happen to man for all his misdoings with the mother nature. The lessons we need to learn are not yet learnt in the modern society. It is so simple to understand that we should not spoil our environment just for some sort of comfortability. But there are only few people or few organizations or few countries which have seriously taken the initiative to stop the misuse of nature.

The most polluters in the world are found to be India and China. They are the present hot spots for a booming economy. And the experts do warn heavily that their rivers will rise in levels to cause more disaster to their own growth.

I will continue the rest in the part two.

Paper made from a Graphite is stronger than Carbon Nanotubes but vulnerable to water

Carbon has interested the researchers the most in the 21st century for its stiffness and strength. After the invention of nanotubes they didn’t stop but developed carbon papers called super papers. This strongest material has only one problem. It is prone to destruction by water.

Researchers have recently developed paper sheets from a form of graphite which is a sister of diamond. They have found that the grapheme oxide particles bind together when immersed in water. This forms a layer like a paper sheet. The strength of this sheet surpasses that of the nanotubes which are currently known to be the strongest.

Unlike carbon nanotubes this can be manufactured to any shape and size. This makes it the most useful for many applications ranging from protective coatings, fuel cells to aircraft fuselages. It was reported that this paper can be formed cheaper than any other stronger material. The quest for stronger and cheaper materials is still ongoing.

But there is one trouble for this invention. The backlash is that this paper is vulnerable to exposition of water. The same water which has bonded the particles together will loosen them and causing their destruction. The next step researchers are taking is obvious. They are looking for finding other materials which can be bonded from any other liquid. Do you have any comments on these developments?

Playing Video Games is Not an Addiction

Many people consider playing video games to be an addiction. This is mainly because the players refuse to stop playing. They gradually spend more of their time in playing than anything else. And what not they even look out for similar games once a game is finished.

The American Medical Association reported that it is not an addiction. There was a heated debate that went on to conclude that it is not an addiction but the data available is insufficient to conclude so. More study is needed to support that it is an addiction.

However their study also revealed that 12 percent are more addicted to the online and video games in Britain. They base this assumption on conditions similar to addiction to alcohol. Alcoholics never tend to give up and at some point of time end up losing time without working, bathing or even eating. They say that in the US 10 to 15 percent are affected by overuse of the video games.

Gazebo

A gazebo is a pavilion structure commonly found in parks, gardens, and spacious public areas. Gazebos are freestanding, roofed, and open on all sides; they provide shade, basic shelter, ornamental features in a landscape, and a place to rest. In their original use—the word appears in English in 1752— they were sited to take advantage of a view, so much so that among the false etymologies for gazebo are Que c'est beau (French: "How beautiful") and the Macaronic Latin gazebo ("I shall gaze").
Earlier examples of garden pavilions that have survived were more solidly built, though open to views. Pavilions that a later generation might have termed gazebos are the garden houses at Montacute House. Some gazebos in public parks are large enough to serve as bandstands.
